According to folklore, the name “Willimantic” is derived from an Indian word meaning “Place of the Swift Running Waters,” an apt designation for this locality. Of course, our town was named after Willimantic, Connecticut, which was built on the edge of the Willimantic River in Connecticut. Learn more about our town’s beginnings.
Willimantic, Maine is located in Piscataquis County, Maine’s least-populous county. Piscataquis County is named for an Abenaki word meaning “branch of the river” or “at the river branch,” and is located at the geographic center of Maine. In land area, Piscataquis is one of the largest U.S. counties east of the Mississippi River. It is also one of two counties in the Northeast (and seven counties east of the Mississippi River) that meets the requirements for “frontier” country – that is, having fewer than six inhabitants per square mile. Willimantic’s population density is 3.5 inhabitants per square mile.
Willimantic is 48 square miles of beauty: 43 square miles of land, and 5 square miles of water. We are home to two National Register of Historic Places — Hathaway Barn and Norton’s Corner School. Learn more about our town by browsing this website. Contact us with any questions!
